UPnP Media Server (re. 1.6.2) disconnects

Postby enricogr on Sun Sep 07, 2008 5:48 am

I am using HipServ (release 1.6.2) on the Lacie Ethernet Disk Mini as UPnP Media Server.
As Media Player I am using the D-Link DSM-320RD, via WiFi.
The problem I see is that, when streaming music, after very few minutes (3-4), the player stops playing, saying the the media server has disconneted; i.e. I cannot listen to music using HipServ.
Instead, if I use as UPnP mediaserver the Synology DS-106e I own (Synology and LaCie are both connected via Ethernet to my wireless router), I have no disconnection, and I can listen to music.
Please, Axentra, can you help me to understand where the problem is with your HipServ?
Regards

Hi Enrico,

You also are experiencing the issues as described in this post: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=228

Roby,
something is similar, but I have only the disconnection problem of the player from the HipServ after 3-5 minutes (that's enough for annoying).

What I can't really understand is related to your hint related to "UPnP Port Forward negotiation": why here should we have problems with UPnP Port Forwarding while all the devices are in the LAN and no NAT function is in place? UPnP AV has no relationship with UPnP IGD. I can't understand.

At the end I catch that some problems could be due to my router (D-LInk DSL-G624T), it is possible, anyway don't forget that the same player (D-Link DSM-320RD) works fine against other UPnP AV servers in my LAN (Synology DS-106e with embedded UPnP AV Server; Windows Media Player on my Vista PC).

Should I wait for your new 1.6.2.1 version or later ones?

Cheers

Hi Enrico,

You are right, UPnP IGD shouldn't, and does not directly conflict with UPnP AV. Due to some Twonky limitations in the past, when some applications on the HipServ needed to perform tasks, they would interfere and cause Twonky to crash. We had to put work-arounds in place to avoid Twonky from crashing. This has now been recently resolved in Twonky, and the 1.6.2.1 update will take care of resolving the issue. The conflicting applications on the HipServ perform different tasks if UPnP is enabled on your router, vs disabled. This is why enabling your router's UPnP IGD can resolve the 5 minute disconnect issue.

Essentially, enabling UPnP on your router may resolve the issue, but the 1.6.2.1 patch will definately fix it.

Cheers,
Roby!

Ignoring the comment above (who can understand??!!), I can say that turning on UPnP IGD on my router has definitely solved the problem of the disconnection of the server after few minutes.
But what I have understood is that the issue is really an Axentra issue when integrating HipServ with the TwonkyVision DLNA Server requested and provided by LaCie: so we look forward the definitive resolution from Axentra in rel. 1.6.2.1.
Thanks Roby

I have been experiencing problems not unlike those reported in this thread when playing music via my Xbox. As far as I am concerned, the stoppages occur more at random intervals than within specific time limits. I will be very interested in seeing if the 1.6.2.1 patch corrects this problem as advertised. Any word on its potential release date? Thanks.

Hi chasboots,

We're trying to cram more than just the media player fix in the update. We're putting it through some initial testing phases at this time. Unfortunately I can't provide an exact date, we're simply doing the best we can.

Cheers,

Hi !!
I've got the same problem... Lacie disconnects every 3 minutes from my playstation (but not from my PCs mac or vista ) . So I cannot see films or listen music...

My Mini disk Ethernet 500Gb is connected to a Time Capsule and the PS3 is connected to it with Wi-Fi .
Can you suggest me something to do to make it works , waiting for the 1.6.2.1 ....? ? ?

Unfortunately yes, because Time Capsule for sure doesn't support UPnP IGD. But let's wait for Axentra to answer.
